What this concern can affect

Sciatica commonly refers to symptoms that follow the sciatic nerve pathway, but not every leg symptom is sciatica. Assessment can examine symptom distribution, strength, reflexes or sensation when appropriate, movement tolerance, and signs that warrant medical evaluation.

New or worsening weakness, numbness around the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe symptoms after trauma require urgent medical attention.

How an assessment can help

An assessment can explore symptom behaviour, relevant history, activity demands, function, and goals. It can also identify when another professional perspective or urgent medical evaluation is more appropriate. A care plan should be based on those findings rather than the condition name alone.

Important: This page provides general education, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation. If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or may be an emergency, call 911 or seek urgent medical care.
